born in 1966 in Cologne, pursued a degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on manufacturing and production technology at
RWTH University, Aachen. He trained as a patent attorney in Cologne at
Maxton Langmaack & Partner, in Munich at the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA), the Federal Patent
Court, and at the Düsseldorf Regional Court under Prof. Dr. Meyer-Beck.
Jochen Maxton provides clients with comprehensive advice on all aspects of intellectual property (IP) law. A key area of his practice is trademark law, including managing global trademark application procedures. He also specializes in managing and optimizing national, regional, and international trademark portfolios. Additionally, he has extensive experience in combating and defending against product piracy, for example in Indonesia. His expertise extends to conducting research on international trademark issues, and he has successfully handled numerous opposition, refusal, and infringement cases both domestically and internationally, for German and foreign clients alike.
Another focus of his work is advising founders and startups, social entrepreneurs, and non-profit organizations in North Rhine-Westphalia, particularly in the startup ecosystems of Cologne, Bonn, Aachen, and Düsseldorf. These clients and those served nationwide from the firm’s headquarters in Munich benefit from his unique approach. Together with his Munich colleagues, he offers complimentary initial consultations on trademark, design, and patent protection, and, upon request, supports the application and implementation of grant programs for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This is especially valuable for startups in their early stages, helping them secure critical intellectual property (IP) even with limited budgets, which can significantly impact their company’s value.
Jochen Maxton has regularly participated in international conferences held by organizations such as INTA, AIPPI, ECTA, and APAA. He frequently travels abroad to maintain, expand, and strengthen the firm's network of highly qualified colleagues specializing in intellectual property law worldwide.
He has been actively involved in various national and international professional associations. Until End of 2024, he served as an elected delegate representing patent attorneys from North Rhine-Westphalia in the Federal Association of German Patent Attorneys (Bundesverband Deutscher Patentanwälte e.V.), and as a board member of the Association of Patent Attorneys of North Rhine-Westphalia (Vereinigung Nordrheinwestfälischer Patentanwälte e.V.).
